Councils work together with PRF to reduce landfill dependency

Councils are working closely with the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) to develop practical, evidence-based recycling strategies aimed at long-term waste reduction and sustainable local solutions, reducing landfill dependency and building cleaner communities.

PRF states that municipalities including Suva, Nausori, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, Labasa, Savusavu, Levuka, and Sigatoka have committed to the initiative, with more councils expected to follow.

PRF Founder, Amitesh Deo, says this marks the first time that municipal councils are collectively aligning with a grassroots recycling organisation to implement long-term solutions.

He adds that the new strategies aim to reduce reliance on landfills such as Naboro and cut waste transportation costs for councils.

Deo says key forum outcomes include collaborative planning, continuous engagement, independent academic monitoring, and a biannual recycling forum to track progress and strengthen partnerships.

Minister for Housing and Local Government, Honourable Maciu Nalumisa, praises the move and encourages all councils to align their waste plans with grassroots recycling groups to drive real, measurable change.

PRF plans to expand the VAKA Forum to other sectors, including tourism, education, and civil society, promoting shared responsibility for Fiji’s sustainable future.
