Community still in shock over death of mother and son

The community in Bau Road in Nausori are still coming to terms with the death of a mother and her child who lost their lives last night after being trapped in their burning house.

One of the relatives Sunil Datt Singh who is still recovering from the shock said he was at a neighbors place when his son informed him about the incident and by the time he reached the scene, the mother and the son were trapped inside the house.

He said the fire was so intense that they were not able to do anything.

Singh whose house was also threatened with the impact of the fire said he spoke to the owner of the house yesterday while he saw the five year old boy playing with his toy yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Police and National Fire Authority are trying to establish the cause of fire that claimed the lives of two people and destroyed their four bedrooms in Naitalasese.

According to National Fire Authority they received a call at around 11.30pm and when the fire fighters arrived at the scene a few minutes later the house was engulfed in flames.

The fire was so intense that it affected 90 percent of a 64-seater bus valued $80,000 that was parked next to the burnt house and also threatened a neighboring house valued $60,000.

NFA also said there were three occupants in the house and while the husband managed to escape from the burning house, the woman and her five year old son died in the fire.
