Call for more specialized training of nurses for safer surgery in Pacific
Pacific Islands Operating Room Nurses Association (PIORNA) President, Natasha Mamea

There is a need for more specialised pre-operative nursing training across Pacific island nations for effective surgical care.

This was highlighted during a panel discussion under the theme “Sterile, Safe and Sustainable – Theatre Practices in Fiji” at the Eco Equity Conference held at the University of Fiji.

During the panel discussion, Pacific Islands Operating Room Nurses Association (PIORNA) President, Natasha Mamea, emphasizes the need for specialized training for pre-operative nurses in the Pacific to strengthen the local health workforce and enhance the region’s capacity to deliver safe and effective surgical care independently.

She highlights that there are visiting medical teams that increasingly require reliance on local nurses to assist these visiting surgeons.

She adds that one of the key challenges lies in maintaining consistency of care protocols, as visiting teams follow specific procedures, equipment standards, and care pathways that local nurses may not always be familiar with.

Mamea urges the need to strengthen connections with other island countries to improve collaboration within the health sector.
