The head of the World Health Organization says a COVID-19 vaccine could be ready by the end of the year.

WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus didn't elaborate further, but there are currently about 40 different vaccines in clinical trials.

The organisation has put its support behind nine vaccines to distribute globally once approved.

More than 35,600,000 people worldwide have been infected with Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic.

The global death toll is more than 1 million.
