Officers from the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters have been directed by the Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew to investigate the death of a man who was being held in custody at the Savusavu Police Station.
The man is alleged to have been assaulted by a prisoner in the cell block yesterday afternoon.
Police say officers rushed the man to the Savusavu Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A team from the CID has been deployed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigations continue.
