Five bus drivers have pleaded guilty to charges of drunk driving while one has been remanded in custody after appearing before Acting Chief Magistrate Ana Rokomokoti today in a special court sitting in Suva.
Mohammed Intiaz and Virend Singh of Citiline Transport, Shane Ravindra and Ashwin Singh of Londoni Transport and Ispar Gounder of Dee Cees Transport all admitted they had consumed alcohol on New Year's Eve while on the next morning they had to take passengers to Deuba.
Upon requesting bail, Rokomokoti asked if they had assurity in court to ensure they are brought back to court on Monday.
Four drivers produced their assurity today and were granted $1000 bail except for Ashwin Singh, who has been remanded in custody until Monday.
Rokomokoti told Singh that his mother or sister were not suitable to be his assurity while his father Mahendra Singh was assurity for Shane Ravindra, his brother-in-law.
The five are to be recalled on Monday.
Eleven drivers, including the bus drivers appeared in the Suva court today for drunk driving despite warnings by Police about safety on our roads.
They were all booked from New Year's Eve to today.
Assistant police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said they have been advising the public about safety on our roads and yet people continue to get booked adding its worse when its bus drivers as they are responsible for their passengers'lives.
Meanwhile, 15 people are admitted at the Lautoka hospital after the carrier they were travelling in veered off the road in Ra on New Year's Eve.
Sokomuri said the incident took place after the driver lost control when all of them were returning home after a church service.
Police are expected to question the driver soon.
