Blues star and towering utility forward Cameron Suafoa has revealed that he is stepping away from rugby as he is currently fighting cancer.

The 25-year-old, who has been playing for the Blues this season despite undergoing radiation, says he is now temporarily stepping away from rugby to focus on his treatment.

Suafoa received the life-changing news in November last year and had a tumour removed almost immediately.

Early in the Super Rugby season, Suafoa balanced radiation and training but the fatigue has now become too much.

Suafoa says right now it is sort of something that is what it is really and he can’t change the fact that he has been going through this or that it has happened to him.

He says in his mind, if he keeps thinking about it, it’s just not going to help him move forward.

Suafoa says in the mornings, he feels good, especially when he wakes up as he is usually full of energy, but after 12pm or 1pm, that’s when he is usually on the decline fatigue-wise.

He says nowadays, he gets really tired easily.

The 25-year-old says he went through a denial stage and delayed telling his family for a few weeks.

However, Suafoa is now tackling cancer like he would tackle his opponents on the rugby field and he is vowing to return, fitter and stronger.

Meanwhile, the Blues will take on Brumbies at 7.05pm this Saturday in Auckland in round 8 of the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific competition.

The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua will take on the Hurricanes at 7.05pm this Friday at the HFC Bank Stadium.

In other matches this weekend, the Reds will take on the Highlanders at 9.35pm Friday and the Force will play the Crusaders at 9.35pm Saturday.
