The people of Batiki Island in the Lomaiviti Province turned out in full force at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School, raising $17,598.90 to support urgent repairs at Batiki District School following a plea from Head Teacher Seremaia Rasalasea.

Rasalasea highlighted the seriousness of the situation, revealing that three students were sharing one chair, and the school required major maintenance, including the replacement of a teachers’ quarters.

Of the total amount raised, Batiki islanders living in the USA, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia contributed $6,535, while those residing in Fiji collected $11,063.90.

Built in 1938, Batiki District School has a long history of community sacrifice.

Over the past 15 years, two representatives from each of the four villages, Mua, Yavu, Naigani, and Manuku, were sent to New Zealand to work in pine farms to generate funds for school repairs.

The school has produced many notable Fijians, including the late Ratu Isireli Caucau, former President of the Methodist Church of Fiji, and the late Taufa Vakatale, former Minister for Education, among numerous others who have served the country.

Community support extended beyond fundraising with two Fiji Corrections Service officers also donated six rugby balls and six netball balls to support sports development at the school.

Following the appeal, the Fiji Water Foundation stepped in with major assistance, donating 30 chairs, 30 desks, 3 whiteboards and 1 Starlink internet package for students and staff.

The Foundation also committed $12,401.10 to help the school’s fundraising committee reach its $30,000 target, fully bridging the gap.

In addition, the Fiji Water Foundation announced plans to develop boreholes on Batiki Island, which has no natural water source and relies entirely on rainwater for drinking and household use.

Batiki Chief, Turaga Bale na Toraunibau, Ratu Jope Naucabalavu expressed heartfelt gratitude, praising the Fiji Water Foundation for its remarkable support and commending the unity and sacrifices of Batiki people both at home and abroad.
