Assessment proposals to mitigate Nadi and Rakiraki Rivers submitted to NDMO for consultation
The flood that took place in Rakiraki

The assessment proposals to mitigate the Nadi and Rakiraki Rivers have been submitted to the National Disaster Management Office for consultation.

Divisional Planning Officer West Sitiveni Tavaga said the assessment has been done by the Japanese International Corporation Agency and the proposals suggest the diversion of the Nadi River to avoid serious floods in the future.

Tavaga also stressed that for Rakiraki they have discussed with some business people late last year for suggestions in order to make Rakiraki Town a flood free area.

Tavaga said the biggest issue is funding.

It was earlier revealed that the Nadi River project has been confirmed with the Japanese Government which will cost $158 million US dollars.

The project will see canals dug from the Nadi Back Road through Wailoaloa towards Nadi Bay.

However, Tavaga said they will now wait for the response from the NDMO and the Government for the next step to be taken.
