As long as we engage in economic recovery there will always be a risk that cases can come into the community – Dr Fong

The Acting Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong says many people have been saying to him that Fiji’s borders are safe and why don’t you let loose.

While speaking at the launch of the Care Fiji Commitment, Dr Fong says he has told these people that as long as we engage in economic recovery we should always accept that there will always be a risk whether we like it or not, that cases can come into the community.

Dr Fong adds the risk exists because Fiji is a COVID contained country sitting around a big pandemic.

He further says that today marks 2 days since Fiji last had any active cases of COVID-19 and it is 180 days since Fiji last had a COVID case outside the quarantine facility.

Dr Fong adds for every COVID-19 case Fiji had, they had screened another 356 people. He says that is a very healthy ratio when compared to global numbers.
