Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong

The Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says for any church to maintain its position as a uniting force among all people, they must remain apolitical and independent.

In an interview with fijivillage while expanding on his Fiji Day opinion piece, Archbishop Chong says if they are not apolitical and independent they forfeit their strength to unify people.

He says the church stands for God’s Kingdom that is peace, justice freedom and truth.

However, Archbishop Chong says at the same time the church has to denounce whatever is against God’s Kingdom which are things such as lack of participation, lack of freedom, injustice and corruption.

He further says the church’s role is to help people form their conscience and thinking so that they are able to vote well and based on the teachings of the church and the bible.

Archbishop Chong adds they also help people participate in politics.
