11 suicide cases and 8 attempted suicide cases were recorded by the Fiji Police Crime Statistics Unit from the 1st of January until the 2nd of February this year.

This is an overall increase of 19% this year compared to the previous year.

The Police Crime Statistics Unit says despite the suicide figures remaining at a staggering 11 cases during the first month of the year, the number of attempted to commit suicide-cases remains a concern.

Meanwhile, leading psychologist Selina Kuruleca says those that tried to commit suicide have got a higher risk of attempting suicide again.

Kuruleca says why iTaukei families are not affected is that they live more in a larger group and can discuss their issues within their family.

She says it's a concern looking at the increase in the number of reported cases among the Indo Fijians.

Kuruleca says they are very concerned with the increase in cases since the beginning of the year and discussions have been held with NGOs in the face of building up the activities as well as their presence in terms of people who may need their services.
