Attorney General Siromi Turaga has stressed to the Fiji Psychological Society on the importance of the registration and regulation of practitioners and be recognised as a national body in the country.

While speaking during the Fiji Psychological Society’s 4th Annual General Meeting, Turaga highlighted the importance of ensuring that psychologists in Fiji are recognised as practitioners and such meetings should be taken as an opportunity for a collaboration between the Government, relevant stakeholders and the Fiji Psychological Society to pave a way for such intentions.

He says effective collaboration is crucial as they recognise the urgency of having a registration process for psychologists.

The Attorney General says in order to have licensing and registration, a national body must be recognised by government to license or to give accreditation and registration to psychologists.

Turaga says he believes the Society is working towards being recognised as the national body.

He is urging the Society to conduct consultations and discussions with its relevant stakeholders to undertake the necessary actions.

Turaga further says mental health is a basic human right that is a crucial part of our personal community and socio-economic development.

He says the way human beings think, behave, and contribute to one’s community are largely affected by a person’s psychological wellbeing.

The Attorney General says it is great that there is an association in Fiji that exists for the purpose of promoting positive well-being and good practice in the psychology profession.
