The Attorney General has this afternoon clarified some judicial matters which according to him need an urgent clarification.
Speaking at a press conference in the last hour, Aiyaz Sayed Khiayum said High Court Judge Justice Jocyln Scutt has been criticized at the recent Transparency International Lecture and believes that reaction to her comments is based on a misunderstanding and deliberate exaggeration and distortion.
However Sayed Khaiyum maintains that all Judges should stay out of the political arena. He said they should avoid making public statements particularly in those areas which may be the subject to litigation. He said that Justice Scutt did not appear to have crossed that line.
He also raised concerned that some Judges have in the past crossed the line however no one raised concerns about their outbursts.
The Interim AG added that Fiji Law Society President, Isireli Fa has changed his positions on a number of matters which is now the source of constant confusion to a number of his own members.
He said the action brought by the Fiji Law Society which challenges the status of the Judicial Services Commission has been languishing in the courts because the Society has been unable to instruct counsel.
He said that the Society was given three months to find a lawyer however when the matter was called yesterday the FLS was unable to arrange a counsel.
Sayed Khaiyum went on to say that people are questioning the appointment of Judges now however no questions were raised when appointments were made in 2000.
