8,076 cases of unlawful possession of marijuana and 861 cases of methamphetamine were recorded by the Police from 2022 to October 2025.

This was revealed by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu while speaking as a panellist at the 27th Attorney General’s Conference in Nadi.

Tudravu spoke on the issue of the role of Police in Drug Enforcement, Operational Realities and Institutional Integrity in Fiji and the Pacific, stating that the reality of Fiji’s drug situation was predominantly with regard to marijuana.

He reassured the forum that the momentum of operations was equally focused on both white and green drugs; however, with marijuana being cultivated in Fiji, the number of cases was higher.

Tudravu also requested the forum’s assistance in having a national dialogue in identifying and addressing the root causes of why many are using drugs or turning to them as a means of earning a living.

He stressed that if marijuana is deemed illegal, they will enforce the law in arresting those involved.

The Police Commissioner spoke on the issue of Institutional Integrity, acknowledging the uphill battle in restoring public trust and confidence when a member of the organization is charged with any drug-related offence.

The Commissioner highlighted that from 2020 to 2025, 47 officers were charged for drug-related offences, reasserting the organisation’s commitment to removing those involved.

Tudravu says he accepts criticism made of the organisation, but this was not reflective of a corrupt institution, as there were still over 5,000 honest officers that remained committed to their oath of service.

The Commissioner also made a plea to the legal fraternity to assist with current efforts of curbing the illicit drug trade, adding the need to change mindsets from relying on one organisation to have all the solutions to one of partnerships.
