7-year-old raped in Lautoka

Police are now hunting for a man who allegedly raped a 7-year-old girl in Lautoka on Monday morning.

Twelve officers are now working around the clock to try and solve the case.

They are conducting house to house enquiries in Waiyavi, Tavakubu, Kashmir and Delai Tomuka.

The victim remains admitted at the Lautoka Hospital. She also had to undergo a surgery.

Police say the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning and the victim was taken by an unknown person away from her home.

The 7-year-old girl was missing from her home between 1am to 3am on Monday.

She returned home at about 4.35am Monday.

The identity of the man is unknown at this stage.

Police are calling on members of the public to contact Crimestoppers on 919 if they saw a man and a young girl between 1am to 4am on Monday in Waiyavi, Tavakubu, Kashmir or Delai Tomuka.

The Fiji Police Force is re‑emphasizing the Prime Minister’s comments that we have to work as a nation to stop the mistreatment and sexual assault of our women and children.

Police say the responsibility of curbing the incidence of these crimes can no longer be placed on the Fiji Police Force alone, and every individuals cooperation is required if we are to prevent any other child becoming a victim.

Police say having to live with the traumatic experience with what they have gone through from such an early age and throughout the rest of their lives is something everyone knows, no one would wish on their very own loved ones.

According to statistics released by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions earlier this week, 21 people were charged with thirty‑eight separate incidents of serious sexual offences in October.

Out of the twenty victims of the thirty‑eight separate incidents, fifteen were under the age of eighteen.
