6 Indians face court for alleged non-declaration of $183,000, money laundering

Six Indian nationals will appear at the Nadi Magistrates Court today in relation to an alleged case of non-declaration of foreign currency and money laundering.

The six were intercepted by officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service on 12th July while preparing to depart Fiji.

They were allegedly found with various foreign currencies amounting to approximately $183,000 in Fijian currency, which had not been declared at the border.

The six were subsequently issued Detention Notices, and the matter was referred to Police for further investigation.

Investigations found that the six had been in Fiji to sell goods at a trade show, where they allegedly earned the money.

However, the Anti-Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crime Unit alleges the money was earned through unlawful activity.

Each accused has been charged with one count of currency reporting at the border under Section 32(1) of the Financial Transactions Reporting Act 2004 and one count of money laundering under Section 69(1), 2(a) and 3(d) of the Proceeds of Crime Act 1997.

A total of 12 charges have been laid against the six accused.
