50-year time capsule to be launched to preserve Girmit legacy and history

Special commemorative stamps honouring the legacy of the Girmitiyas and a 50-year time capsule will be launched during the 147th National Girmit Commemoration Day on 15th May.

The national commemoration will be delivered virtually from the Fiji Museum through online and television platforms, allowing Fijians locally and abroad to take part in the celebrations.

Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh says the commemorative stamp collection has been designed to capture the history, journey and contributions of the Girmitiyas, while also recognising the traditions and cultural items brought to Fiji during the Girmit era.

Singh says the stamps are especially aimed at connecting with Fiji’s diaspora community around the world who continue to proudly call Fiji home.

He says although digital communication has become more common, stamps still carry historical and emotional value and will help preserve an important part of Fiji’s history in a lasting way.

The Minister says three commemorative stamps will be launched, with each representing different aspects of the Girmit journey and heritage.

Singh adds the 50-year Girmit Time Capsule will preserve stories, artefacts, written reflections and messages that reflect Fiji’s understanding of the Girmit legacy today.

He says the initiative aims to ensure the spirit and legacy of the Girmitiyas continue to inspire future generations.

The Time Capsule will remain sealed for 50 years and is scheduled to be opened on 15th May 2076.

The project is being supported by the National Archives of Fiji and will be housed at the Fiji Museum.
