Four students of a boarding school in Tailevu are still being questioned by Police at the Korovou Police Station for allegedly assaulting a 14-year-old student.
The alleged incident took place at Queen Victoria School’s dormitory on Sunday where the Year 9 student was assaulted for reasons yet to be established as investigators continue to interview the four suspects.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro says the four were taken in this morning.
When questioned by Fijivillage on how is the Ministry addressing issues relating to bullying and corporal punishment at QVS to prevent further cases, Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy says the ministry has involved trained counselors.
Doctor Reddy says tonight and tomorrow, the counselors together with the Police Officers at Korovou Police Station will visit QVS to conduct an awareness program on disciplinary issues.
Meanwhile, a teacher and 5 students of QVS are currently facing charges of assault in court in relation to a separate case earlier this year.
28-year-old teacher Saimoni Liutaki, a 17-year-old, a 19-year-old and three 18-year-old students have asked the court for time for reconciliation.
The matter has been adjourned to 2nd May to check on reconciliation.
Their bail is extended.
Liutaki was charged with assaulting students at the boarding school.
When asked about the status of the students who have been charged, Doctor Reddy said that the students were suspended for 3 days and have also been given last warning but now have assumed normal classes.
He says further repetition will result in the students finding another school.
The Minister also says that they are currently undergoing counseling sessions and according to the Principal, they have dramatically improved in their attitude.
The teacher is suspended from official duties pending the Public Service Disciplinary Tribunal hearing.
Doctor Reddy says the Ministry is working in collaboration with Parents, School Managements, and other key Stakeholders in trying to reduce indiscipline in schools through awareness programmes facilitated by Divisional Counselors and the National Substance Abuse Advisory Council.
