NDMO urges the public to exercise caution

Three evacuation centres have opened up in the Central Division to provide shelter for those affected in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku.

The National Disaster Management Office says the affected families are residing in St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute and Marata Hall in Wailoku.

NDMO is urging residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas in the Central Division to exercise caution as heavy rain overnight has caused rising river levels and flooding.

They say they have partially activated the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) and are working with all relevant authorities to monitor the current situation.

They further say reports received at the Centre have confirmed that intense rain has led to flooding in towns, communities, and affected minor roads and bridges.

NDMO adds that some areas are experiencing landslides and traffic disruptions, and they are pleading with the public in these affected areas to refrain from any unnecessary travel into these areas.

The Authority says public safety is of paramount importance to them at this time.

If people need assistance to move to higher grounds, they can contact the Fiji Police Force and the National Fire Authority.

NDMO is also advising people to stay away and refrain from attempting to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads and walkways where water is above knee level.

They say this is crucial for several reasons, all of which are centred on ensuring personal safety and minimising the risk of life-threatening situations not only for the public but also for first responders as well.

They further say floodwaters can contain contaminants, and they are advising the public to avoid contact where possible.

They add that people should be mindful of the risks of leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever and Diarrhea after heavy rain.

The NDMO reiterates that given the continuous rain recorded in the past few days and already saturated soil, there are possible risks of landslides occurring in some areas.

They are urging the public residing in these areas to always be on high alert, exercise caution and adhere to advisories issued by relevant authorities at all times.
