25 patients have successfully gone through an open heart surgery at the CWM hospital.
A team of 65 New Zealand Medical Volunteers has been in Suva for the past five days to provide their time and services for free while their travel, accommodation and meals are provided by the Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation.
Team leader Dr Parma Nand said that rheumatic heart disease is the main problem that they are dealing with.
Nand said once it comes to a certain stage that the patients cannot tolerate, then the valve has to be changed.
He said if patients are not treated they tend to live for two to three years.
Minister of Health Jone Usamate said the government is grateful for this team for the operation they have done which Fiji cannot provide.
The NZ Medical Volunteers have been coming to Fiji for the past 10 years.
