2,100 people in 40 evacuation centres during TC Mona

40 evacuation centres were activated during Tropical Cyclone Mona with 2,100 evacuees.

National Disaster Management Office Director Anare Leweniqila, highlighted this while briefing the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama today.

He adds they are focusing on their relief and recovery operations within the next 24-48 hours.

Leweniqila says the Divisional Commissioners and the Ministry of Health are currently working together to serve the evacuees.

He says that they have received the initial damage assessments from the Fiji Roads Authority, Water Authority of Fiji and Energy Fiji Limited, with all reporting minimal damage.

Leweniqila says that there has been vigilance shown from the members of the public while preparing for the cyclone.

He adds that as of this morning they have received reports that 15 roads in Viti Levu were closed due to over flooding and he says that FRA has confirmed that they it will be accessible within 24 hours.

Leweniqila says that there is still a warning in place for Vatoa and Ono-i-lau.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has also stressed that all schools used as evacuation centers will have to be cleared, cleaned and ready for use at the start of the school year.
