Search and rescue operations for the nine persons reported missing at sea continued today, with authorities covering approximately 26,480 square miles across key search sectors.

The Republic of Fiji Navy says since the search commenced late last week, an extensive area has been covered based on the information provided by family members.

They say the search is being coordinated through the Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji, with the Fiji Navy working closely with the Fiji Police Force, Water Police, regional partners, local communities, and private operators.

They say today’s operation involved six assets including the Guardian-class patrol boat RFNS Timo; a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-8 Poseidon; a Defence-chartered fixed-wing aircraft from Northern Air and a helicopter with Fiji Navy air riders; and two Water Police assets.

They say search areas included sectors towards Vatulele, Beqa waters, Kadavu waters, and Lomaiviti waters, and further west of Kadavu and up the coral coast due to elements and based on last known position was around Solo Lighthouse, north of Kadavu.

The Navy says their teams have also visited family members of the missing persons to reassure them that every available effort is being made to locate their loved ones.

They also acknowledge and appreciate the support of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, national agencies, local communities, hotel operators and local air providers, and all partners assisting the search.

Members of the public are urged to report any sightings, floating debris, unusual activity at sea, or information that may aid the search.

The Navy is asking villagers and coastal communities to stay vigilant and pass on information through their Turaga ni Koro, to the nearest police station or local authorities.
