100,000 people in the country today are diabetic.

National Health Advisor Non Communicable Diseases Dr Isimeli Tukana said majority of these diabetics are 25 years and over.

Dr. Tukana said this is 36,000 more from 2002 where 64,000 people were diabetic.

According to Dr. Tukana local amputation rates are 400 a year, 2 a day and 1 every 2 hours.

He said the shift in the NCD fight is to work with pregnant mothers and children so healthy eating habits can start early.

Awareness campaigns are also being intensified with the Food Industry being engaged to reduce the amount of salt, sugar and fat used.

So far 80 schools around the country have also been declared Health Promoting institutions.

Meanwhile out of the $800,000 allocated for NCD's, $240,000 is for Diabetes.
