Working committee formed to address blocked drains and road flooding

Following serious concerns raised by residents and drivers in the greater Suva area regarding blocked drains causing flooding and surface flooding on roads, a Working Committee has been set up between the Suva City Council and the Fiji Roads Authority.

FRA says they will discuss this with the Council as these are formally Council roads and they will need the drainage reticulation maps to ascertain capacity and major improvement to the current drainage system.

They say they will look at the reticulation plans and explore the best ways to maintain the reticulation system.

Recent bouts of heavy rain had resulted in surface flooding at Karsanji and Grantham Road in Raiwaqa, parts of Suva City and Samabula.

Drivers say flooding on roads can lead to accidents and also damage cars.

They say the drains must be cleared by the FRA to ensure the safety of people using the roads.

A resident of Wailea Settlement in Vatuwaqa whose home got flooded about two weeks ago says blocked drains during high tide caused the flooding.

She says most of her belongings got wet due to the flooding.
