A former civil servant based at the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Accounts and his wife have been remanded in custody for abuse of office for personal gain and aiding and abetting abuse of office respectively.

It is alleged that between November 2019 and June 2022, Ledua Biuvuli Matai, while being employed in the civil service as the Principal Accounts Officer of the RFMF, in abuse of the authority of his office, did arbitrary acts for the purpose of gain.

Matai failed to declare his personal interest in a business named Ink Escape Supplies before adding the business as an RFMF vendor and facilitating payments amounting to $467,616.40 to Ink Escape Supplies from the RFMF which was prejudicial to the rights of the RFMF.

The couple were represented by lawyer, Simione Drole from Maisamoa Lawyers who asked for bail on behalf of the couple, but was denied as there were no proper sureties provided.

The case has been adjourned to tomorrow.
