Auckland family keeps Christmas spirit alive by cooking what they grew up with in Fiji

For Mohammed Shiraz and Reshma Ranjana, Christmas in Auckland feels incomplete without the warmth of home.

They say nothing compares to Christmas in Fiji, where being with family and friends was the highlight of the holiday.

In an interview with fijivillage News the couple say they are originally from Rarawai, Ba and moved to Auckland just over a year ago.

Ranjana says it was not about material things, but the people and the bond shared during the celebrations.

She says back home, everyone would come together, enjoy big meals, and there was a real sense of togetherness.

Shiraz says in Auckland, adjusting to life in a new country, they are mindful of their finances, but it does not mean they can not celebrate.

He says it is about making the best of what they have.

He adds that they want to keep their culture alive by cooking the food they grew up with and celebrating in a way that reminds them of home.

Shiraz says for them, it is important that their children understand and appreciate their heritage.

The family sends a heartfelt message to their loved ones in Fiji, urging them to be safe, take care of their loved ones and enjoy the time together.

Shiraz and Ranjana also hope to inspire their new community in Auckland to embrace Fijian culture, highlighting the beauty of their traditions, food and the love they bring to celebrations.
