Residents in the Laucala Industrial Area have raised safety concerns over damaged and abandoned vehicles parked along roads and public spaces, with the Nasinu Town Council planning to remove the vehicles and take action against their owners.
Nasinu Town Council CEO Felix Magnus says they will issue notices to the owners requiring them to remove the vehicles.
He says owners will have 30 days to remove the vehicles, after which the matter will be taken to court.
Magnus says the council will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Land Transport Authority to share data and use LTA regulations to empower council officers on the ground.
He says the council will then proceed with the removal of the abandoned and damaged vehicles.
Magnus says the council will also approach the Ministry of Environment to determine whether the vehicles can be taken to the Naboro Landfill.
He says the costs for removing the vehicles will be charged to their owners, with LTA assisting in identifying the owners and recovering the charges when they renew their vehicle licences.
Magnus says some vehicle owners leave the vehicles at night and disappear.
He says the council can track the owners through the engine serial numbers or licence plates if they are still attached to the vehicles.
