Four deserving former footballers will again receive assistance towards their children’s education through the RC Manubhai/Apco Coatings Veterans Tournament this year.
Fiji Football Association CEO Mohammed Yusuf says the tournament has been held for the past 12 years and provides former district representatives with an opportunity to reunite, stay active and maintain their fitness.
Speaking during the pool draws at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa, Yusuf says the education assistance initiative, which has been running for the past seven years, is part of the tournament’s ongoing focus on the welfare of former players.
Yusuf says Fiji FA does not take any profit from the tournament, and proceeds generated from sponsorship and registration fees are channelled back into supporting the welfare of former players.
The tournament will be held from this Friday to Sunday in Ba, with matches at the Four R Stadium at Govind Park and the Fiji FA Academy grounds.
A total of 15 teams have been confirmed, with nine competing in the Over-40 division and six in the Over-50 division.
Yusuf says the tournament brings together players who have represented their district teams and have now retired or are nearing retirement.
He says it also provides an opportunity for families to get involved while promoting the well-being of veteran players.
Fiji FA has also revealed plans to expand the tournament next year to three age categories - Over-40, Over-45 and Over-50.
Yusuf thanked RC Manubhai and Apco Coatings for their continued support of veteran football in Fiji.
