Fiji needs a broader response to the growing challenge of illicit drugs, with greater focus on why young people are becoming vulnerable to drug use.
Speaking at the launch of Christian youth radio station Life FM at Studio 6 this morning, Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Industries, Commerce, Business Development Manoa Kamikamica says enforcement alone will not solve the problem.
He says while law enforcement agencies must continue working to disrupt those who traffic and profit from illicit drugs, Fiji must also understand the factors that are making young people vulnerable.
Kamikamica says questions need to be asked about whether young people feel connected to their families and communities, whether they have opportunities and hope, and whether they have positive role models and somewhere to turn when they are struggling.
He says the response must involve families, schools, communities, health professionals, civil society, faith organisations, the private sector and the media.
Kamikamica says Fiji must be prepared to not only say no to drugs, but also say yes to purpose, opportunity, belonging and hope.
He says the same principle applies to other challenges in communities, including HIV and broader public health concerns.
Kamikamica says these difficult issues cannot be addressed through silence and require accurate information, responsible behaviour, prevention, access to health services and compassion.
He says stigma should never prevent a person from seeking help.
Kamikamica says a mature society is one that can confront difficult realities honestly while retaining its humanity.
He says responsible media organisations also have an important role in starting conversations that need to be started.
Kamikamica says Life FM can encourage young people to make responsible choices, provide information, give families a reason to talk and challenge harmful behaviours, while reminding people who are struggling that they should not be abandoned.
