Women’s groups in Yalobi, Kese, Tamasua and Navotua in the Yasawa Islands have received a timely donation of sewing machines from the charitable arm of South Sea Cruises Group, Vinaka Fiji.
The initiative is expected to create long-term economic benefits for women, their families and the wider community.
Vinaka Fiji says the donations were made following an assessment of women’s groups in the communities, with priority given to groups that are active, functional, reliable and committed to using and managing the equipment effectively.
It says the sewing machines are intended to provide women with practical tools to strengthen their existing sewing skills and create opportunities for income generation within their communities.
The groups can use the equipment to produce clothing, school uniforms, bags, curtains, handicrafts and other products for local and potential external markets.
Vinaka Fiji says the initiative is also expected to strengthen the capacity of women’s groups by providing them with the equipment needed to turn their skills into sustainable livelihood opportunities.
It says the initiative will encourage women to work collectively, share skills, mentor younger women and develop small-scale sewing enterprises.
Vinaka Fiji says the sewing machine initiative is more than an equipment donation, representing an investment in women’s skills, confidence, entrepreneurship and financial independence.
It says the initiative will contribute to stronger and more resilient communities across the Yasawa Islands.

Environmental Conservation – Supporting environmental restoration through reforestation, tree planting, nurseries, and other initiatives aimed at protecting the natural environment and strengthening community awareness of climate change.
Women’s Economic Empowerment – Supporting women’s groups through income-generating activities, skills development, equipment, and livelihood projects that enable women to become more economically independent.
Community Development – Working in partnership with communities to identify their priorities and support projects that contribute to long-term social and economic development.
