Nahigatoka Village has rallied behind the Nadroga Stallions ahead of the crucial do-or-die stage of the 2026 Skipper Cup, bringing together current players and rugby legends to reaffirm the village’s generations-long support for Nadroga Rugby.
The gathering brought together current players and former Nadroga rugby legends who hail from Nahigatoka, with the occasion reflecting the strong historical connection between the village and the provincial side.
The Nadroga Rugby Legends say the gathering brought back memories of the Golden Era of Nadroga Rugby, when the Stallions dominated the local rugby scene and collected numerous titles.
They say Nahigatoka played an important role during that era, with former players from the village returning this week to stand alongside the current generation of Stallions.
The Legends say while the players and generations have changed, the support and passion for Nadroga Rugby remain strong.
They say the current players should remember that the Nadroga jersey represents history, sacrifice, family and the villages and people who have supported the provincial side through generations.
The occasion also highlighted the contribution of three influential Nadroga coaches from Nahigatoka Village who led the Stallions during different periods of the team's Golden Era.
Vilikesa Bola coached during the 1960s, Adriu Nadredre during the 1970s, while Ratu Meli Kurisaru's era stretched from the 1980s to the early 2000s.
The Nadroga Rugby Legends say the three coaches helped mould players, develop talent and instil discipline in teams that went on to dominate the local rugby scene.
They say as leadership passed from one coach to another, the knowledge, experience, discipline and passion associated with Nadroga Rugby were also passed on to the next generation.
The Legends thanked the people of Nahigatoka Village for their hospitality, generosity and continued support for the Stallions.
They say the gathering was about more than providing the players with a meal, as it reminded the team that thousands of people continue to believe in and support them.
The current Stallions have also been urged to remember the coaches, players and communities that came before them as they head into the crucial stage of their Skipper Cup campaign.
The Nadroga Rugby Legends say it is now up to the current generation to carry the legacy forward and write their own chapter in the proud history of Nadroga Rugby.
In Round Six of the Skipper Cup today, Nadroga will take on Ba at Lawaqa Park.
In other matches, Taveuni will face Naitasiri at Ratu Cakobau Park, Tailevu will take on Rewa at Nakelo District School, Nadi will face Navosa at King Charles Park, Lautoka will take on Malolo at Churchill Park, while Kadavu will face Suva at Nasese.
All matches will kick off at 3pm.
