An emergency helicopter was able to refuel at Albert Park in Suva this morning after authorities swiftly cleared the area to support a life-saving medical evacuation of a sick child from Moce Island in the Lau Group.

The aircraft, which was transporting an intern and emergency medical equipment, was on its way to the remote island to retrieve the child and their mother when the operator encountered difficulties finding a suitable refuelling location.

With time critical, approval was granted for the helicopter to land at Albert Park.

A rapid coordination effort followed, involving the Fiji Police Force, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, National Fire Authority and Suva City Council, who worked together to secure and clear the park for the emergency landing.

The helicopter was able to land safely, refuel and continue its journey without delay.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka confirmed in a statement that he had received a call from the operator and facilitated the arrangement after learning of the urgent situation.

Rabuka says the incident highlighted both the importance of quick inter-agency coordination during emergencies and the logistical challenges affecting aviation operations.

He also noted that rising fuel costs and supply constraints had placed additional pressure on emergency response flights, underscoring the need for stronger coordination between aviation authorities and emergency service providers.
