Fiji's leading long distance runner, Yeshnil Karan, is firmly on track to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month after making an outstanding recovery from emergency appendicitis surgery. This has been confirmed by Athletics Fiji today.Athletics Fiji says Karan underwent surgery on 4th April and, just three months later, has exceeded expectations in his return to training. They say following the mandatory six-week recovery period and a further six weeks of structured training, Karan has rebuilt his fitness and is entering the final phase of his Commonwealth Games preparations.

The Athletics Association says his latest performance at the Gold Coast Marathon 5km race on Saturday provided another encouraging sign of his progress.

They say Karan clocked 15:00 to finish 11th overall in a quality field, running confidently with the lead pack and covering the opening 3,000 metres in a promising 8:43.

While he faded slightly over the closing stages, the performance reflected the continued rebuilding of his race-specific endurance and finishing speed.

Coach Atma Maharaj says the result confirmed Karan's recovery remained ahead of schedule.

Maharaj says considering where Karan was just six weeks ago, the progress has been extremely encouraging, and the strong aerobic base he developed before surgery has allowed him to recover remarkably well.

He stressed that there is still important work to do, particularly in rebuilding speed endurance and race sharpness, but he is firmly back on track for Glasgow.

Karan returned to Brisbane four weeks ago, where he is training alongside several of Australia's leading middle and long-distance athletes as he completes the final phase of his Commonwealth Games preparation.

Athletics Fiji says with less than a month remaining before the Games, they are encouraged by Karan's continued progress and remains confident he is building towards peak condition ahead of representing Fiji on the international stage in Glasgow.
