Live music, American food, fireworks and hundreds of invited guests set the scene as the United States Embassy in Suva celebrated the 250th anniversary of American Independence this afternoon.
About 700 guests attended the celebration, including the President of the Republic of Fiji, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Chief Justice Salesi Temo, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale, Tonga's Prime Minister Lord Fatafehi Fakafanua, Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament and members of the diplomatic corps.
Speaking at the event, United States Chargé d'Affaires ad interim John Degory, reflected on 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
Degory highlighted the strong partnership between the United States and Fiji, saying the relationship continues to grow through cooperation in areas such as security, economic development, education and people-to-people ties.
Speaking on behalf of the Fijian Government, Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Kiti Temo congratulated the United States on the milestone and reaffirmed Fiji's commitment to strengthening its partnership with the United States.
Guests enjoyed performances by the Fiji Police Band and the United States Army Band, while American-style food, refreshments and a fireworks display added to the celebrations.
The celebrations will continue tomorrow with a public performance by the United States Army Band at Ratu Sukuna Park from 6pm.
