Talent alone will not be enough as Bati face short World Cup preparation – Potter

Talent alone will not be enough as Bati face short World Cup preparation – Potter
Fiji Bati Head Coach Mick Potter says talent alone will not be enough at the Rugby League World Cup, with the side having just one week to train together and several new faces needing to quickly build a strong connection within the team.
Potter says the limited preparation time is not ideal, particularly when trying to establish a system that every player understands.

However, he says every team is working under the same rules and the Bati will have to make the most of the time available.

Potter says the mood in camp is positive, with players spending time together and getting to know each other better.

He says building that connection will be crucial, particularly with several players new to this level of international rugby league.

Potter says while there is plenty of talent in the squad, the Bati will need something special as a team if they are to compete against the world's best.

Meanwhile, Potter says there are no major injury concerns among the players selected for the World Cup.

He says a few players were unavailable for selection because of injuries and post-season operations, including Jahream Bula, who required shoulder surgery.

The Fiji Bati and Fiji Bulikula presented their traditional iTatau to Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru as they prepare to leave for the World Cup.

The Rugby League World Cup kicks off next Thursday, with Australia taking on New Zealand at 9.05pm.

The Bati will begin their campaign against the Cook Islands at 5.05pm next Sunday at McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle.

They will then face Australia at 9.05pm on the 25th before taking on New Zealand at 4.30pm on the 31st.
