Rogue elements in institutions must be identified and investigated – Rabuka

PM agrees with FLP for an independent inquiry to be conducted

Rogue elements in institutions must be identified and investigated – Rabuka
No institution is perfect, and if there are rogue elements within those institutions, they must be identified and investigated.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted this to the media this afternoon when questioned about the missing cocaine exhibits and public trust in the judiciary.

Rabuka says when people talk about problems within the judiciary, they should not only look at judges, as the judiciary includes everyone working within the system.

He says this includes those sitting on the bench, clerks, storemen and exhibit keepers.

When questioned about Chief Registrar Tomasi Bainivalu and the judiciary remaining silent on the issue, Rabuka says this does not mean that those involved will not be questioned.

Rabuka says this is not the only area where taxpayers have raised concerns, as there are issues in other areas as well.

He says while the government tries its best, it will never be able to satisfy everybody all the time.

When asked on Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu's comment that Police cannot do an audit on drug exhibits in the court premises around the country as they are under the judiciary, Rabuka says of course they will, and not only the audit, but the participation of other agencies who have committed themselves to cooperating with other agencies in Fiji.

When asked about the Fiji Labour Party's call for an independent inquiry, rather than relying solely on a police investigation, Rabuka says he agrees with the proposal.

He says the inquiry could be conducted independently or involve someone already working with Fiji in these areas.
