Young people need support, not blame amid growing social challenges – Fiji Council of Churches
Young people facing challenges such as HIV and AIDS, drugs and human trafficking need greater support and guidance rather than being blamed for the social issues affecting them.

Fiji Council of Churches General Secretary Reverend Sepiuta Hala'api'api says young people today are facing challenges that previous generations may not have experienced while growing up.

Reverend Hala'api'api says churches are working to become more proactive in addressing issues affecting young people, both within church spaces and in communities.

She says programmes are being developed to nurture and support young people, while raising awareness about the dangers and consequences of social issues affecting the country.

The General Secretary says the message from the churches is that young people are loved and valued, and they should recognise the value of their gifts and talents.

She says greater emphasis needs to be placed on prevention and providing young people with the guidance and support they need to navigate the challenges they face.

Reverend Hala'api'api says while Christian denominations may have different approaches, doctrines and programmes, they are united in their efforts to support young people, build stronger communities and contribute to a better Fiji.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Council of Churches is also observing the Season of Creation from 1st September to 4th October.

The Council is working with the Pacific Recycling Foundation through the VAKA Forum to help church leaders and communities better understand recycling, pollution and waste management.

Reverend Hala'api'api says churches have an important role in encouraging people to look after God's creation and to think beyond simply putting rubbish in bins by understanding what happens to waste afterwards.
