Bus fares will increase by 22.5 percent temporarily from this Friday, but passengers will not have to pay the additional cost.
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission has approved the temporary fare adjustment following a review of revenue assessments and renewed submissions from bus operators.
The adjustment will apply to regulated bus routes across Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni for six months, ending on 9th April 2027.
The Government will absorb the increase and compensate bus operators directly, meaning passengers will continue paying the same fares they currently pay.
The FCCC says the temporary adjustment is necessary to help ensure bus operators can continue providing essential services without disruption, particularly amid forecasts of rising fuel costs.
The FCCC further says it is also mindful of the impact higher transportation costs could have on Fijian households.
They will continue monitoring global fuel prices and industry conditions during the six-month period and may reassess the temporary measure if international fuel prices stabilise or decline.
Passengers whose bus cards are 100 percent subsidised will see the full fare charged reflected on their receipts, although they will not be required to pay the increase.
