More than 200 people, including members of the St Joseph's Secondary School Alumni, took part in a Pinktober walk aimed at promoting cancer awareness, early checks and healthy living.
Alumni President Lavinia Kaumaitotoya says about 80 percent of the participants were alumni members.
Kaumaitotoya says the event was organised in partnership with the Sumo Marathon Club, with the alumni using the event to encourage its members to stay healthy and support women affected by cancer.
She says pink merchandise sold out during the event, which was the alumni’s first activity following its Jubilee Week.
Kaumaitotoya is encouraging women to get checked regularly, saying early detection and prevention are important.
She acknowledges that cancer is not always openly discussed in Fijian culture, but says people should come forward, talk about their concerns and seek help.
Kaumaitotoya says the alumni also wants to encourage its members to take part in monthly walks, starting with the 5-kilometre walk before gradually moving up to the 10-kilometre distance.
Participants made a gold coin donation, with the money going towards the Fiji Cancer Society.
She says the exact amount collected is not yet known, but with more than 210 participants, raising more than 200 dollars would be a significant achievement for the small event.
