The Government is prepared to hold the next General Election under the current Constitution if the proposed constitutional amendments and referendum process cannot be completed before the election.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the Government will continue with the proposed changes to the Constitution, including the amendment and referendum process.
When asked by fijivillage News whether the entire constitutional process would be completed before the next General Election, Rabuka says the Government will have to determine whether there is enough time to complete everything before the election.
He says if the constitutional amendment and referendum process cannot be completed in time, Fiji will proceed to the General Election under the current Constitution.
Rabuka says the Government will continue working through the proposed changes and then assess whether the process can be completed before the country goes to the polls.
