Nadi will be declared a city in December this year following Cabinet's endorsement of the proposal.
Cabinet has recognised Nadi's rapid development and significant contribution to Fiji's economy as the country's international gateway and a major tourism and commercial hub.
The formal declaration and community celebrations are expected to take place in December, marking an important milestone in Nadi’s continued growth and development.
Between 2022 and 2025, Nadi recorded 1,106 approved development applications valued at about $1.23 billion, reflecting strong investment in residential, commercial and tourism developments.
Cabinet says the proposed city status is expected to encourage further investment, improve municipal services and strengthen urban planning and governance.
They say it also aims to address ongoing challenges, including traffic congestion and flooding, as Nadi continues to grow.
