St Bedes athletes from Savusavu overcome rural challenges to compete at Coca-Cola Games

By Pauliasi Korobiau
28/04/2026

Despite the many challenges faced by rural schools, twelve athletes from St Bede’s College in Savusavu have defied the odds to participate in the 2026 Coca-Cola Games.

Speaking to fijivillage Sports, trainer and Commercial Studies teacher Petero Ratucove says the school has had an interesting preparation journey, facing several ongoing challenges, including limited ground and training facilities, consistently wet weather conditions, and the lack of a trained PEMAC teacher to guide students in their training and preparation for the event.

Ratucove says that despite these challenges, one of the school’s athletes, Maria Rauqica, who secured the school’s lone bronze medal last year, is working hard ahead of this year’s Coca-Cola Games.

He adds that despite the setbacks, St Bede’s College has not underestimated its chances and is instead making full use of the resources and time available to prepare for and participate in the annual event.

CFL signs radio partnership for Coca-Cola Games, plea made to cheer, not to jeer

By Vijay Narayan
29/04/2026

Communications Fiji Limited, the parent company of LegendFM, FM96, VITIFM, Navtarang, Radio Sargam and fijivillage, is the radio partner of the 2026 Coca-Cola Games and organisers say this is an important partnership from the 1990s to date to ensure that the development of our youths continues through sports and entertainment.

Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Secretary and Competition Director, Biu Colati says CFL plays a big role in bringing awareness on who are the best student athletes around the country, and also bringing the excitement and energy at the Games.

Colati says sports creates a positive impact, and that can also replace the negative things out there.

He also calls on people going out to the Games and supporters to come and cheer, don't jeer.

Colati also says when you are commenting against a child on social media, at the end of the day those children are still the children of this nation.

Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Fiji representative Lawrence Tikaram says CFL has been instrumental in building the excitement, the fanfare, the livelihood and the continued engagement of the Games.

Tikaram says the Coke Games is not just about the Games, it is about the holistic development of the children and the opportunities - and that starts from the sports days and the support of parents and schools.

He says the spirit of the Games is built on the support of family, schools and their ex-students.

While speaking on negative comments on social media about the athletes, Tikaram says people who post online should understand that every child represents a family, and asks people to be mindful of what they say online.

CFL General Manager, Charles Taylor says CFL is known for energy and entertainment, and CFL as a team knows how important the Games is for the young people of the country, and the parents, ex-students and the community here and abroad.

Taylor says the Games is a celebration of youth and sports.

He calls on people commenting on social media to be responsible.

Taylor says they have noticed most of the negative comments come from older people and they should know better.

He says we should be there to build the athletes rather than bring them down.

The Coca-Cola Games will be held from tomorrow to Saturday at the HFC Bank Stadium.

By Mikaele Liga, Navitalai Naivalurua

Defending Coca-Cola Games boys’ champions, Marist Brothers High School, are heading into this year's competition in high spirits, with no injury concerns among their athletes.

Head coach Antonio Raboiliku told fijivillage Sports that the team is well-prepared, but acknowledged that Queen Victoria School will be the team to beat in the boys’ division, given their strong performances during the zone competitions.

He adds that three of last year’s gold medallists are returning and are playing key mentoring roles for younger athletes. Among them is Ebenezer Saukuru, who won gold in the Intermediate Boys’ javelin at the 2025 Coca-Cola Games with a throw of 58.85 metres.

The coach says another athlete to watch is Kirikiti Biu, who claimed gold in the junior boys’ 100 metres last year.

Raboiliku says the team has 58 athletes competing this year and is focused on improving on last year’s performance.

He says Marist secured the overall title in 2025 with 12 gold, 9 silver, and 9 bronze, totaling 30 medals across all events.

He emphasised that the athletes are mentally, physically, and spiritually prepared for the three days of competition.

Defending girls’ champions MGM leave no stone unturned in title defence

By Nilufa Buksh
30/04/2026

Defending girls champion of the Coca-Cola Games, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School, coach Waliki Tiko Satakala stresses that their secret to success is taking no shortcuts as they prepare to defend their title at the 2026 Coca-Cola Games.

Satakala says the school’s success comes from preparing from the beginning of the year, staying disciplined, and teaching athletes to take care of their bodies stressing the days of only preparing when a competition is near.

Among MGM’s returning gold medallists this year are Veniana Ranadi in the junior 100 and 200 metres, Adikeva Nalau in the junior 400 metres, Merekeleni Ratubaka in the junior 1,500 and 3,000 metres.

Savaira in the junior javelin and shot put, Sera Nasilivata in the intermediate 100 and 200 metres, Vasiti Rekisa in the intermediate shot put, Keleni Samantha Lutu in the intermediate long jump and triple jump, and Gladness Simpson in the senior 800 and 1,500 metres.

Satakala stresses that if Fiji wants to catch up with other countries, athletes need to start preparing as soon as one Coca-Cola Games ends and continue working throughout the year.

The coach says while coaches play their part in physically preparing athletes, students also need to manage their sleeping habits, hydration, and food intake to perform at their best.

As schools gear up for the Coca-Cola Games, the MGM coach says they are hoping to push the boundaries of athletics this year and wishes all competing schools well in their preparations.

The Minister also called on students to refrain from bullying, saying there is no place for bullying in schools, at the stadium, in the stands, on social media, or anywhere else.

She says too often there are reports of secondary school students bullying each other or facing bullying both online and offline.

Tabuya also stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment and properly disposing of rubbish.

She says littering is one of the causes of flooding in communities, homes, and the environment.

Speaking on the importance of sports, the Minister says sports should build people up, not break them down.

She says as the only female president of a provincial rugby union, she has seen how sports build friendships and bring people together.

She also acknowledged the inclusion of para-athletes in the Games, saying this is more than just participation—it is a clear statement that ability is not defined by limitations and that excellence comes in many forms.

MGM credits teamwork and structure for Coca-Cola Games success

By Nilufa Buksh, Rashika Kumar
14/10/2026

Through blood, sweat, tears and tragedy, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School has retained their Coca-Cola Games Girls' division title for which head coach Waliki Tiko Satakala has acknowledged the parents, Gujarat Education Society and the Marist Club.

MGM High won 15 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze, Adi Cakobau School came in second place with 7 gold, 4 silver and 9 bronze, while Natabua High School is third with 5 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.

Satakala says it sank in yesterday that they had gone ahead and built a comprehensive lead, and today was just formalities.

While crediting the athletes, the coach says the personal drive has to be greater than the coaches’.

He has also highlighted that it was an emotional period for athlete Tamara Ralagi, who lost her mother on Saturday, and won silver in the Junior Girls High Jump and bronze in the Long Lump event of her grade.

Satakala says he had to break the news to Ralagi with his daughter on Sunday, and when they later went to the LDS Church on Grantham Road, the message that day was about supporting and consoling someone who has lost a loved one.

He says Ralagi initially appeared cheerful, but when he took her away from everyone else and shared the news with her, the reality of losing her mother began to sink in.

Satakala says he spent quite some time consoling her after she realised her mum would no longer be around.

He says with her father and and the entire family’s backing, it was decided that she would continue with the competition.

The coach says one of the main challenges is managing athletes who have multiple coaches, sometimes two or three, which can create differences in training methods and require constant realignment as a team.

He says another challenge is the varied family backgrounds of students, with different levels of financial and resource support affecting athletes’ overall wellbeing.

To address this, the team maintains regular communication with parents to help them understand the demands of training, including fitness and dietary requirements.

He adds that while families invest significantly in their children, this often comes with high expectations.

Satakala has also highlighted that it’s not just about results at MGM, it’s about the enjoyment the athletes experience and at the same time, there is support from the school and also the wider school community, which is the Gujarat Education Society.

He says Education Society is doing a great job in trying to set a trend for other schools that look after student athletes and help set them up for life.

Celebrations will be held when Term 2 begins in 2 weeks.

Coca-Cola Games celebrate first participation of athletes with disabilities

By Temalesi Vono
03/05/2026

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has hailed the inclusion of athletes with disabilities as a historic milestone during the closing ceremony of the Coca-Cola Games 2026.

Speaking at the event, Rabuka emphasised the significance of the first-ever participation of the Fiji Vocational Technical Training Centre for Persons with Disability, describing it as a powerful step towards greater inclusion, equity and opportunity for all Fijians.

Rabuka says the milestone reflects a growing commitment to ensuring that sport is accessible to everyone, regardless of ability and reinforces the role of national events in promoting unity and equal opportunity.

He also highlights the long-standing importance of the Coca-Cola Games in Fiji’s sporting landscape, noting that many of the country’s national and international athletes have emerged through the competition.

He says the Games continue to play a critical role in identifying talent early while fostering confidence, discipline and ambition among young athletes.

The Prime Minister pointed to the scale and national reach of this year’s event, which brought together 2,484 student-athletes from 157 schools across the country, including participants travelling from remote areas such as Rotuma and Lau.

He commended the determination and resilience shown by students who travelled long distances to compete, saying their efforts challenged expectations and signalled even stronger performances in the future.

Meanwhile, a total of 152 events were staged during the Games, supported by more than 400 officials, volunteers, technical staff, medical personnel and security officers.

The event also drew an average daily crowd of around 20,000 spectators, with an estimated 600,000 viewers tuning in locally and internationally via live streaming.

Rabakewa of SVC speaks about her journey and pressure as an athlete in the Coke Games

By Mikaele Liga
04/05/2026
Brieanna Rabakewa's journey started off with her and her father both learning how to throw through videos on YouTube and TikTok.

This was shared by Brieanna Rabakewa of Swami Vivekananda College after winning gold in the Senior Girls Discus at the 2026 Coca-Cola Games.

Rabakewa says she never stopped training, even during the holidays and bad weather.

She says that through her 5 years competing in the Games, she has been blessed with so many unforgettable moments of growth, achievement, and joy, from building lifelong friendships to experiencing the pride of representing my school, every season has shaped me into a stronger and more confident person.
Rabakewa shared about the side of being an athlete that often goes unspoken, the struggles to encourage other athletes to keep going, even when things feel overwhelming.
She says there are so many things they go through that people don’t always see.

Rabakewa says behind the performances, records, and medals, they quietly battle things like trying to find our identity outside of sports, figuring out who they are beyond the field, the track, or the game.

She says they push through burnout, even when the sport they love starts to feel exhausting.

The SVC student say they carry mental struggles in silence because they are expected to always be strong.

She says balancing school and sports feels like living two lives at once, constantly trying not to fall behind in either.

Rabakewa says one of the hardest fears is letting people down, coaches, families, teammates, and even ourselves but the truth is, all of this is normal because it’s part of growing, part of learning who we are, and part of becoming stronger, not just as athletes, but as people.

She says every challenge, every doubt, every moment of pressure is shaping them into something greater than just what they do on the field.

Rabakewa said as she stepped onto the circle for her last throw, she wanted to make a statement, and even with everything you are going through, the Lord would never put you through anything that you cannot overcome and even with everything thrown at you, it is only for your good, to come out stronger, growing through everything they once thought they
couldn’t handle.

She says as she walked off that circle, she carried more than just a result, she carried growth, faith, and a story she will always be proud of.
