A pearl farming initiative in Bua has produced 405 healthy juvenile oyster spats despite lower harvest numbers and challenging conditions, as efforts continue to support sustainable aquaculture and rural development.
The Ministry of Fisheries’ Pearl Team recently completed a week-long deployment in Nasau Village, Navakasiga in Bua, where they worked alongside villagers and youth groups from May 11th to 15th to strengthen pearl farming efforts and promote sustainable farming techniques.

Although the harvest of melamela pearl oysters was lower compared to previous years, the Ministry says the operation still achieved positive results with the collection of 405 healthy juvenile oyster spats.
The oysters were prepared and secured back into ocean mainlines for long-term grow-out and cultivation.

They say when the oysters develop into pearls, it also helps equip young people with practical skills, encouraging better use of marine resources and strengthening village economies.
The Ministry says the operation faced environmental and logistical challenges, including heavy biofouling on collector lines and difficult working conditions, however, the fisheries official and villagers worked together to complete the process.
The visit concluded with an i’tatau ceremony to thank the people of Nasau for their support and hospitality, with the Ministry reaffirming its commitment to supporting rural communities through sustainable development initiatives.
