What began 29 years ago as a simple plan to earn a living from the land, has grown into a successful livestock farm that now provides employment and helps other farmers in Cakaudrove start their own farming ventures.
Fifty-two-year-old Narsaiya Naidu Chetty, the owner of Naidus Goat Farm at Nuku Estate, has been named the 2026 Goat Farmer of the Year at the National Agriculture Show in Labasa.
Chetty has not only built up his own farming business but has also helped several aspiring livestock farmers get started by providing breeding stock and sharing practical farming knowledge.
He started livestock farming 29 years ago and has continued to reinvest his earnings to expand his operations over the years.
His 100-acre property now has 130 goats, 37 Fiji Fantastic sheep, 69 ducks and 98 free-range chickens, with the livestock valued at more than $54,500.
The day-to-day operations are managed by Aminiasi Katonivualiku, who has played an important role in the farm's growth.
Chetty says farming requires commitment, good management and a willingness to continue investing for the future.
He says one of his biggest challenges is ensuring there is enough pasture to feed his growing livestock population.
To address this, Chetty has started growing Juncao grass to provide a more reliable source of feed.
The Ministry of Agriculture also supported the farm with a goat shed during the 2021–2022 period, while improvements have been made to fencing and grazing areas.
Chetty's contribution extends beyond his own farm, as his operations provide employment and opportunities for others to learn about livestock farming.
His 29-year journey highlights how a small beginning, continued investment and commitment to farming can create opportunities not only for one family but also for others in the community.
