A 70-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman have lost their lives in a multi-vehicle accident in Navua.
Police say it is alleged the victims' vehicle veered into the opposite lane, resulting in a collision involving three vehicles.
Four people travelling in the other two vehicles were treated at Navua Hospital before being discharged.
The bodies of the two victims have been taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where post-mortem examinations will be carried out.
Police are calling on all road users to take greater responsibility for road safety.
The latest tragedy has pushed Fiji's road death toll to 31, compared with 39 during the same period last year.
Police are again urging members of the public to change their mindset when it comes to road safety, stressing that keeping the roads safe is not solely the responsibility of law enforcement but of every road user.
They say fatal crash statistics for the first six months of 2026 show that speeding remains the leading cause of road deaths, followed by careless driving, drink-driving, pedestrians being at fault, improper overtaking and driver fatigue.
Police are also urging all Fijians to speak up against dangerous driving behaviour, warning that it poses a serious threat to everyone using the country's roads.
