Parliament could sit until Christmas Eve to complete Constitution Bill process - Rabuka
Parliament could continue sitting until December 24th this year to allow more time for discussions and the final stages of the Constitution Amendment Bill, which will determine the future of Fiji's Constitution.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka highlighted this after the Joint Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitution Review met at Parliament today.

Rabuka says Parliament was originally expected to hold its final sitting in the first week of November, but this could now be extended.

He says Parliament may return in the first week of November to seek additional sitting days, with further sittings possibly held in the second or third week of the month.

The Prime Minister says the previous parliamentary sitting allowed 30 days for the process, but the past week was spent dealing with other matters.

He says today's committee meeting was the first opportunity to finalise the agenda and programme for the week.

When asked whether other political parties had raised concerns during the meeting, Rabuka says no further concerns were raised about the main issues in the proposed constitutional changes.

He also says Cabinet has agreed with the Special Committee on the Constitution.

The Constitution Amendment Bill has already passed its second reading and will need another vote in Parliament before it can proceed to a national referendum.
