Diwali festival serves as a reminder of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
This was revealed by Shagrika Shayal Singh of Nawaicoba, Nadi, saying Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama, Mata Sita and Lakshman to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, following Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.
She says she celebrated Diwali by visiting the temple with her husband before visiting her parents' home, where friends also came over to share sweets and spend time together.
Singh who is celebrating her first Diwali with her in laws says she helped her mother-in-law prepare sweets for the celebrations, with the two staying up until 11pm despite her work commitments.
She says the celebrations also included sharing snacks, catching up with friends, taking photographs and making TikTok videos.
Singh says the family also planned to offer prayers, light diyas and set off firecrackers, which are her husband's favourite part of the celebrations.
However, she is urging Fijians to be considerate when setting off firecrackers, particularly around young children and household pets who may be frightened by the loud noises.
Singh says she personally dislikes firecrackers because her dog gets frightened by them.
She is wishing all Fijians a happy Diwali and encouraging everyone to celebrate safely while being mindful of others.
