Rabuka says regional partners can assist Fiji in fight against drug trafficking

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says Fiji is in constant discussions with bilateral and regional partners on strengthening surveillance of its Exclusive Economic Zone to help combat drug trafficking and transnational crime.

Rabuka made the comments while responding to questions from fijivillage News in Savusavu on the sidelines of the PINA Summit.

He highlighted this while responding to the question by fijivillage News on whether Fiji is discussing greater support with its bilateral partners for surveillance of its EEZ, given the billions of dollars worth of drugs being trafficked through the Pacific in recent years and the drugs reaching Fiji, and the associated consequences from this.

Rabuka says Fiji is talking to its partners constantly.

He says what more can be done depends on what the country or host country asks for.

The Prime Minister says Fiji needs to work out what more can be done and where its development partners, particularly regional partners, can assist in the fight against transnational crime, especially drugs.

When asked whether Fiji should expect Australian officials to be embedded in the military following the signing of the Veitacini Treaty with Australia, Rabuka says this is not part of the agreement, but officers could be embedded when needed, particularly to assist with transnational crimes such as drug trafficking.
