W35411 Private Melaia Biu has made history as the first female soldier to stand guard at the main entrance of Fiji’s Presidential State House.
The Republic of Fiji Military Forces says the tradition is similar to the world-renowned Guards at Buckingham Palace, with State House guards required to stand guard for hours at a time as part of their ceremonial duties.
29-year-old Private Biu, who is from Korotolu, Moce in Lau, is currently serving with Third Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment and has consistently demonstrated commitment and professionalism in her duties, having participated in Exercise Guadalcanal, Exercise Bougainville and other significant operational activities assigned to the Unit.
The RFMF says her appointment as a State House guard this week reflects the growing contribution of female soldiers to the RFMF.
They say her achievement is a source of pride for her family and the people of Moce, Lau, and an inspiration to women pursuing careers in the RFMF.
The RFMF says beyond her operational and ceremonial role, Private Biu is also an Army and National Cricket representative.
It says she is currently part of a 3FIR contingent that departed QEB to conduct the Thin Red Line ceremony at the conclusion of the Indo-Pacific Intelligence Chiefs Conference in Nadi.
The adds says Private Biu’s historic appointment is a proud chapter in the story of the RFMF and a reminder that professionalism, discipline and commitment know no boundaries of gender.
